CopyQ
CopyQ copied to clipboard
Snip & Sketch becomes unresponsive in Windows 10
Hello! Thank you for the wonderful program. I have been using Ditto for a long time, and I just found your program yesterday. It is much better than Ditto for my use. However, I found one bug that is causing a great inconvenience, which I describe below.
I use Windows 10 21H1. By default, Snip & Sketch saves any changes made automatically to the system clipboard. I use it with a pen for providing feedback to students in my courses and found the automatic copy feature convenient. However, if I make too many changes (about 5 strokes of handwriting) on a clip, CopyQ stops accepting new images to its clipboard, and the menu of Snip & Sketch stops responding. As a result, I cannot change a pen to an eraser, for example. After waiting a minute or two, Snip & Sketch becomes responsive. The log file confirms that accessing the imageData takes a long time: 60 ~ 90 seconds.
I tried to ignore Snip & Sketch in CopyQ using Command. It works as intended by not storing images from Snip & Sketch at the beginning. However, after many changes made in the clip, Snip & Sketch still freezes and CopyQ exhibits the same behavior.
I am fine with not storing the images in Snip & Sketch to CopyQ, but it is very inconvenient that Snip & Sketch freezes. (Ditto also had a similar problem, but Snip and Sketch was responsive once I made Ditto ignore Snip & Sketch.)
How to reproduce:
- Clip the screen by pressing Win + Shift + S.
- Open the clip in the Action Center.
- Using the mouse, draw a line on the clip.
- Each time you make a change on the clip, Snip & Sketch copies the changed image to the clipboard. You can see the copy icon in the menu of Snip & Sketch changes to the checkmark.
- After drawing lines multiple times, the copy icon of Snip & Sketch does not change to the checkmark. At this point, the menu is not responsive. I cannot change to a different pen.
- As soon as I quit CopyQ, Snip & Sketch becomes responsive.
I found Snip & Sketch's copy button changes to the checkmark after a change IF CopyQ is running.
If CopyQ is not running, the copy button does not change into the checkmark after each change. The new image is still being stored in the system clipboard.
I can't reproduce this. I am drawing and drawing but it copies the image and everything is responding the same.
Thank you for trying. I tested the issue with another Windows machine and was able to reproduce it.
I thought the auto-copy was the default setting in Snip & Sketch, but it was not. Did you try it with the auto-copy on?
auto copy was on yes and no problems for me :/
I assume the issue is likely to be due to my specific setup/hardware. I will investigate more. Thank you!
maybe check if there is a app that takes over some of the tasks that copyq might use.
What you can do is to create a account on the same computer. Install ONLY copyq with no other changes and see what happens if you do the same thing.
