Simplewall VS Portmaster

Open FrostBlade5 opened this issue 2 years ago • 9 comments

I used simplewall for months, extremly great program - a must have for me. Thanks for this !!!

@henrypp i guess you have noticed another similar program in the makings called portmaster? https://safing.io/portmaster/

What do you think about it? How is it different from what it can do compared to simplewall?

thank you. I'll test it when I have time.

Thank you. That's attractive. Competing with each other seems good. As they upgrade.

To me it comes down essentially simplewall is simple, to the point. You install it and it works. Port Master is a large download, and the confuration startup with choosing filters and DNS is just a bit too much for me. DNS and adblocking I do at a router level so no need for any of the fancy stuff.

and unlike portmaster that is multiplatform. Regrettably, Simplewall is Windows only

I prefer Simplewall, it's simple, easy and light on system resource unlike Portmaster which is a full package of firewall, DNS and adblocking in one program.

Portmaster is a pain to use if you use anything else for DNS and adblocking. I use AdGuard and NextDNS (set up in AdGuard), and Portmaster bypasses them. I never succeed in making them work altogether.

If not set, I loose no connection. If set, I loose DoQ since Portmaster has not that feature, and AdGuard doesn’t work anymore.

I tried to follow the compatibility Github’s threads but it fails here.

It doesn't work on 32-bit systems, so Simplewall is the winner here

  1. It's not as simple as simplewall.
  2. It's an electron app (which I hate and tend to avoid), so prepare to have an additional small Chromium browser with GPU rendering running alongside. UI is laggy and too animated.
  3. It consumes around 270 MB of RAM (portmaster-core - another 20), so 290 MB, compared to simplewall, which only consumes 11 MB.
  4. Closing portmaster UI, RAM usage goes down to 16 MB though and portmaster-core - 20 MB. So ~36 MB when UI is closed.
  5. It didn't work like a usual firewall, it just shows windows uwp notification which asks to open the UI. It doesn't even mention firewall functionality anywhere in the app and there's features that makes it more of a privacy manager you see on android apps.
  6. Its business is to sell SPN feature which allows you to set separate identity for every app (kind of like VPN)
  7. I use Cloudflare WARP+ and it didn't work when PortMaster was enabled. I allowed numerous connections and services related to WARP, but it didn't help.
