Mod Loader says there is an update but doesn't update.

both downloaded and installed to the bloonstd6 folder as described in: https://hemisemidemipresent.github.io/btd6-modding-tutorial/

but every time I start the mod loader it says an update is available. The game crashes when I start it, so I figure the update is not being installed which is why it keeps saying there's an update. But where else could the update files be if not the direct link from the mod loader's own guide?
