Compass is influenced by device roll

I'm testing this plugin and it doesn't seem to work properly. I expect the compass to point north even when the device is tilted to left or right. However when the device is tilted to the left and right, the compass is off. I guess this is caused by the roll (see image) is influencing the calculation, which it shouldn't, if I understand correctly.

Am I misunderstanding something?

This package doesn't work in landscape mode on Android. It does work in portrait mode.
