Viewnior is an excellent application

This isn't an issue; instead it's a compliment.

Great, but is it still maintained, and how does it compare to the other Linux image views out there, e.g.

  • or the many listed at https://www.slant.co/topics/3906/~best-foss-image-viewers-for-linux ?

Thanks for the tip about nomacs. I just installed nomacs. I like it very much!

Viewnior is more of a lightweight image viewer; nomacs more of a simple yet powerful image manipulator.

Compliment also from my side. I'm using it since almost 10 years now, and it's fast enough to literally play a video when images for each frame are in a folder, a simple test all other image viewers fail, revelling their intrinsic inefficiencies. I hope you will manage to keep it clean though, instead of adding more distribution-specific features no one needs, like setting wallpapers which doesn't work on many desktops, such as mine. These kind of features are also against the philosophy of writing a program that does does one job very well, and it's the philosophy of simplicity that makes your program better than the others. It's also how to write software that lasts. When just writing another bloated mess, 5 years later someone else will be frustrated with it and write another program that will then, again turn into a mess, fixing bugs that have occurred and been fixed in the dozens of image viewers before it. A never-ending story, that never leads to a reliable piece of software.
