Add a real easy way to use VPN

Open probonopd opened this issue 4 years ago • 4 comments

Consistent with our project values, we should add a real easy way to use VPN.

Like, one click.

Ideally one that doesn't create logs and needs no sign-up, no no username and passwords.

https://leap.se/ lists some such providers:

  • Riseup.net
  • The Calyx Institute

These are using OpenVPN.

There is also

  • https://github.com/Snawoot/opera-proxy/

There are "Zero configuration" and "Simple and straightforward" (the project's description!), so match our philosophy exactly. But seem to be only for HTTP(S) and not system-wide.

Could not get https://gitlab.com/nitrohorse/bitmask-openvpn-generator to work so far. It is supposed to generate OpenVPN configuration files (.ovpn) to connect to Riseup and Calyx's VPN.

If it would work, it should be a matter of running openvpn --config *.ovpn.

Could integrate this (also) into the wireless networking tools.

I love the idea of integrating OpenVPN into the network manager, especially combined with the possibility of using ghostbsd/networkmgr. This would also allow a non terminal option for remote workers using OpenVPN.

https://hide.me/en/free-vpn amy be another option. They say

  • Life-time free VPN, not a trial
  • No speed throttling
  • No registration, no sign up required

This seems to be backed by a business model because the are selling monthly plans as well: https://hide.me/en/pricing
