Installer won't boot in VMware, either in BIOS or EFI modes

As the title states. The installer will get as far as displaying a black-and-white FreeBSD logo, and then it hangs forever. Sometimes VMware reports a firmware error or a CPU error, sometimes it doesn't, but in either case it never finishes booting.
