Haskell LSP fails to restart with error mentioning outdated hls version

Which OS do you use: Linux wattwil 6.1.0-27-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.1.115-1 (2024-11-01) x86_64 GNU/Linux
Steps to reproduce
starting or restarting Haskell LSP fails. the error message (which cannot be copy/pasted) is launching server using command /home/frank/.ghcup/tmp/ghcup-ghc-9.10.1_cabal-3.10.3.0_hls-2.2.0.0/haskell-language-server-wrapper failed.
hls 2.9.0.0 is installed and set, hls 2.2.0.0 is installed (but not set) in ghcup.
2.2.0.0 is outdated! it should not be requested for the ghc 9.10.0.1 which is set in ghcup.
I have added a minimal cabal hie file (i also tried with a gen-hie produced one, no difference). it seems that the ghc eersion and the cabal versions are detected. why then the error?
I do not see why Setup.hs should be included in other modules but can add it there; should I?

This is indeed weird. Could you include the logs of the extension? See here for instructions for how to get them: https://github.com/haskell/vscode-haskell#troubleshooting. Maybe this helps us out in understanding what's going wrong.
My only theory is, that there is a .vscode/settings.json file in your project which states something similar to
{
"haskell.toolchain": {
"hls": "2.2.0.0"
}
}
which would force the vscode extension to choose HLS-2.2.0.0 regardless of compatibility. See https://github.com/haskell/vscode-haskell?tab=readme-ov-file#setting-a-specific-toolchain for the documentation of this config.
This could also be specified in ~/.config/Code/User/settings.json or ~/.config/Code - OSS/User/settings.json, depending on whether you use VSCode or VSCodium or any of the de-microsofted VSCode versions.

thank you for the hint. on the computer I work today i have only empty "haskell.toolchain" entries (I have deleted them now - is this clever?) and will check when the problem occurs again.
It is fine to delete them, but if they were empty, then I doubt it solves the issue, since they shouldn't have any effect.
next week i will have access to the computer where I think i posted the issue initally. i will report...
on this computer i just got the message 'hls does not support 9.8.4 yet' - which is clearly not correct (per webpage). my installation is Version: 1.99.02289 Commit: d033c221592da47b4d3ea04e23a8d1ec6d8b7333 Date: 2025-04-05T10:09:00.970Z Electron: 34.3.2 ElectronBuildId: undefined Chromium: 132.0.6834.210 Node.js: 20.18.3 V8: 13.2.152.41-electron.0 OS: Linux x64 6.1.0-32-amd64 and i have nothing in the vscode. is this related?
This is expected, unfortunately!
While the HLS 2.10.0.0 release with support for GHC 9.8.4 happened one or two weeks ago, the vscode-haskell extension only uses HLS binaries that have been uploaded by the GHCup team itself, not the binaries that have been uploaded by the HLS team. This is done for extra quality assurance.
Unfortunately, due to limited time, GHCup didn't release yet binaries for HLS 2.10.0.0, so the extension can't use it, even though our official website says we support GHC 9.8.4.
The easiest solution is to wait a bit longer until the GHCup team manages to do the release, and as a workaround you can build HLS 2.10.0.0 from source for GHC 9.8.4 via:
ghcup compile hls -v 2.10.0.0 --ghc 9.8.4
if I recall correctly, vscode-haskell understands binaries compiled from source via GHCup.
