2014.2.0.0 installation eats up disk space on the main hard disk independent from installation target

I want to install Haskell Platform 2014.2.0.0 on an old machine running Windows XP (32 bit). The hard disk of the machine is almost full. Thus I decided to install the platform to a memory stick. Unfortunately, the installation failed due to disk space shortage on the main hard disk. Thus I temporarily moved data from the hard disk to the memory stick. This way I got 1 GB of free space on the main hard disk but the installation still fails (only later than before).

Would it be possible to consume less disk space on the main hard disk or free temporary files more frequently or put temporary files to the target disk?

I think the way this works is an unpack inplace, then a copy. So I don't think we really have a great way to handle this...

i don't see us moving from NSIS anytime soon after recent discussions, and I don't think NSIS handles this case?
