Comment markdown formatting needs text field populated to function

Describe the bug The markdown comment formatting (quote, bold, heading, etc...) results in a crash notification unless comment text field has been populated first. After text entry, formatting options can be used even if prior text is deleted.

To Reproduce Steps to reproduce the behavior:

1. Click reply option on post or comment
2. Use a formatting button when starting reply prior to other text

Expected behavior Markdown formatting characters populate into text field without needing manual text entry first
