Create a Guide/Template: Trauma-informed Facilitation for your project
Overview
We need to create a trauma-informed facilitation guide for product managers and leaders order to be able to create spaces which are open for participants to engage with and learn about sensitive or difficult topics, but also prepare facilitators to be aware of signs of participants being triggered and be able to respond appropriately.
Action Items
- [x] Gather examples of how other projects have done, adding each example as a link in the resources section
- [x] Once done, remove the "TG: Gather Examples" label and add the "TG: Draft Template" label
- [ ] Create a draft template, either in markdown format in this issue or a google doc in the ~old product management google drive~ new product management google drive>Product Management Guides
- [ ] Once done, remove the "TG: Draft Template" label and add the "TG: Create Guide" label
- [ ] Create a guide on how to use the template
- [ ] Once done, remove the "TG: Create Guide" label and add the "TG: Review Guide" label
- [ ] Review the guide with product management communities of practice
- [ ] Once done, remove the "TG: Review Guide" label and add the "TG: Leadership Review" label
- [ ] Present to Hack for LA leadership team for sign off
- [ ] Once approved, remove the "TG: Leadership Review" label and add the "TG: Place Guide" label
- [ ] Possibly create an issue template on .github
- [ ] Include link to template under resources if you add it as a template in .github

This guide has some helpful information about creating a trauma informed workplace to support employees
-
Trauma Informed Skills for Supervisors that has some good info. The intended audience is addiction counselors, but the information applies across the board about trauma and how to recognize and respond to trauma responses

generally i feel like language, context setting, and making spaces accessible for folks is super important. starting out with access needs ensures that folks feel like they have their needs met. here’s a general resource about the importance of access needs
-
this resource specifically focused around facilitation that is helpful
-
and this one as well
-
this is the doc that i go to for anything related to trauma-informed care. it isn’t specifically focused around facilitation but i find it to be a helpful primer. the principles are useful to go through when facilitating space to make sure that you are being trauma-informed in your approach
-
community/group agreements to also be a useful practice. here’s an example of what they might look like. you would want to present these to the group and then have them agree/disagree/edit and then vote to adopt them as a group

Hi @myrandi Please update the following
- Progress: How much progress have you made on the issue?
- Blocks: Are you facing any blockers?
- Availability: How much time do you have to work on it this week?
- ETA: When do you think it will be completed?
@myrandi Hi, hope you had a great holiday. Are you still working on this, or would you like to be unassigned?
bumping this back into your inbox - @myrandi Hi, hope you had a great holiday. Are you still working on this, or would you like to be unassigned?
@myrandi bumping this back into your inbox (also reaching out to you on slack), but please reply here, in case I miss the message

Thanks for sending that. Missed the first one, as I'm not checking Github notifications atm. Currently taking a break but plan to come back in a month or so if all goes well. If someone wants to work on it in the meantime, great! Otherwise, I'll pick it up when I return. Hope you have a great holiday!
I wrote back
I cleaned up the issue a little bit, to put all the relevant links in the top of the issue. Happy to hold it for you for the next two months. We will reach out at that point if we have not heard from you.
Will check again on 2022-02-20
Plan for next steps is to gather additional examples (there are more outside of Hack for LA in other brigades in the broader CfA Network). I will be meeting with others working on trauma conscious facilitation over the next few weeks. When I have compiled some examples, I will add them here, and resume the following step of creating a draft template.
Immediate Tasks
- [ ] Hold initial meetings (within CfA Network) to discuss potential collaborations and resource sharing
- [ ] Potential ongoing meetings and info sessions to discuss collaboration / resource sharing
- [ ] Inquire about practices outside of CfA Network (if applicable/accessible)
- [ ] Compile resources
- [ ] Draft summaries of TCF components with examples
Upcoming Tasks
- [ ] Draft Template in a Google Doc (est: late April)
Anticipated date of finishing this step: March 31 - April 15, 2022
@myrandi, so glad to see you are still working on this. We look forward to reading your next draft and hearing about your process. Hope you are well.
Best,
Bonnie
