Native Mac OS packages support
I really like how the installation of packages in Nix is implemented. Are there any plans to support packages in Mac OS without Docker?
I know I added a bunch of labels to this in our last issue triage but I think I probably should have taken a little time to explain what they mean. As it stands currently I think there would be a non-trivial amount of work around getting support for this into the codebase.
That being said, I know myself and @fnichol have a deep love for platforms that some might consider esoteric (BSDs, Solaris, MacOS, etc) but that doesn't necessarily mean we know currently whether or not we'll be able to support those platforms. That is to say from my own perspective I can't say "Yep we're gonna have that" and I also can't say "Nope we're not gonna have that".
I am tagging @fnichol and @reset here because we've had lots of conversations on the subject, but it would be good to pick their brains on this as fletcher is the "Owner" of the build system and I think that Jamie is currently the Owner of the supervisor. That is to say a lot of the work involved in supporting features/platforms like this would start there but would eventually trickle through our entire stack.
I'm keenly interested in this as well, and happy to help implement it.
Habitat seems like one of the best tools so far to deliver on the 'portable application' promise. Unless we want to rewrite everything in Go.
