Odd self signed certificate JSON payload

I followed the HTTPS sample with the SSL option. When I query the toxy proxy, I'm getting this odd JSON {"message":"self signed certificate"}

Yes I am using a self signed cert. Is there a work around to rejectUnauthorized: false?
