Add support for Cinnamon and MATE windows managers
Those windows managers seem to have a lot of issues with Qt Systray implementation, and the way they implement showing/hiding windows. As a result, we currently are not accepting any bug reports related to those windows managers related to the following functionality:
- Hide/show Thunderbird when clicking on an icon;
- Hide Thunderbird when minimized;
- Start Thunderbird when Birdtray start IF you are starting Birdtray using the desktop manager.
While for all those issues it is possible to create a workaround, I do not use any of them, and have no time to support them. Thus if anyone is using those window managers and is interested in supporting them, you are welcome to join the project. Until this happens, the above-mentioned bugs related to Cinnamon and MATE will be closed.
For information. I'd come across the problem with Cinnamon occasionally crashing on Mint but always losing the text from open apps on the menu bar, long story short it seems to be related to the blink speed for the tray icon, I'd put it up to about 75%. Dropping back to 50% I don't see the issue anymore.
This one you certainly want to post to Cinnamon bugtracker.
I have just done so
One easy workaround for Linux Mint is to use the Flatpak thunderbird version. Birdtray seems to be configured for it out of the box when you get from Flathub. Works fine for me on Linux Mint 20.3
Hide/show Thunderbird when clicking on an icon;
Hide Thunderbird when minimized;
Start Thunderbird when Birdtray start IF you are starting Birdtray using the desktop manager.
All of these seem to work fine for me with Birdtray version 1.11.4 on Fedora 39 running MATE 1.26.2.
I do have the same issue as issue #571 reported on XFCE where if clicking on an email notification is used to open Thunderbird, clicking on Birdtray does nothing until Thunderbird is manually minimized. Then, clicking on Birdtray will hide/show Thunderbird once again as expected.
