New chapter about doing good and getting paid

Open yabellini opened this issue 3 years ago • 10 comments

On the Slack of the translation Greg Wilson ask:

would it be useful to add (a translation of) https://third-bit.com/2019/07/27/doing-good-and-getting-paid.html to the book? If so, what else should it say, or what should it say differently to reflect a wider range of situations and experiences? Thanks - Greg

Suggestions for this new chapter on the Slack:

  • Yanina Bellini Saibene:

  • [x] I am agree that is a good idea to have this material in the book (and in Spanish).

  • [x] Perhaps after point 4 or between 3 and 4 I would put as an option Contact with professional associations, in general they offer courses to their enrollees and can be a good place to generate contacts and experience.

  • [x] About the $ amounts, are very regional, perhaps advise to consult with colleagues what is the average price or analyze in the courses / training offered what is the average cost, in general the price of the course offered by institutions/organization, etc. is published.

  • [x] Something I do is also offer my training for free as an extracurricular course at the University. First it helps me to give back a little of everything I received from the public education of my country and also allows me to generate networking, trying new material, try how I teach with someone new and training people to teach (we usually teach together with my husband this way regularly). Something like this could go in the last point (do not stop teaching for free), I would add as possibilities to tech for free the meetups of the user groups or communities of practice such as R-Ladies, RUGs, etc.

  • [x] An explanation on Creative Commons licenses with interesting examples like those in this text would be interesting, perhaps as part of this new section / chapter of the book. (Adding now because perhaps can be useful: https://yabellini.netlify.app/post/compartirmaterialdoi/)

  • Laura Acion:

    • Yes
  • [x] add somewhere the quote by Orwell about getting paid that you use

  • [x] it is too English-North-American center and does not generalize South of Rio Grande as is regarding $. Maybe say that for other regions, the amounts need to be rethought or something. Or clarify the area to which you are referring to

  • [x] one alternative for a new niche is to translate successful training to other languages.

  • [x] I was coming to add exactly this last point by Yani. These licenses and their pros (and cons?) are not well enough explained in the book as far as I remember and it is something that would be great to have with a highly pragmatic perspective (rather than some awful legal terms) in your book.

  • [x] One last comment from me: perhaps add some advice on how to cope with repeating the same course over and over again without lowering the level of initial enthusiasm. I am finding the hard way that teaching a semester-long class is a whole different story to repeating the same content over and over again weekly. The more I know the content, the more my enthusiasm plummets even if the contents are improved as I teach. I think that this chapter could have some "free-range teaching self care" advice

  • Patricia Loto:

  • [x] I believe it will be pretty useful to add this material to the book (and in Spanish too).

  • [x] And I agree with Yani, in a small city like mine give some free courses at the University or even, in some regional events like a hackathons organized between Universities and government it’s a great opportunity to make contacts and to know potentials clients.

Sorry about that. I have refined this list in https://buildtogether.tech/rules-freelance/ for the next book - it's all CC licensed, so we can copy that over.

  • [x] I will add to this that prices change by region and country. For example, there is no way for me to charge those amounts that Greg mentions in the post in Argentina. So searching for prices of similar courses in the market where you will sell them is a good idea to set the price. And setting — I don’t charge the same for a nonprofit as I do for a big company. And in all those settings your instinct is probably STILL going to be to undercharge ( :-P).

  • [x] "how to make a living from teaching" is a great idea - might be something in Gunderloy's book about being a freelance programmer to help?

Hay un capítulo ya creado con material compartido en varios blog post y en un artículo en LatinR que ahora se puede citar. Refinado a partir del feedback de los blog post y del resumen.
