Questions

Open Shoegzer opened this issue 7 years ago • 2 comments

I realize this is not the best place to ask questions, but I don't know of any other way for this project so I'll ask a few basic ones here and hope it's okay. Feel free to redirect them to somewhere else if appropriate. My decision to purchase the hardware gunconf supports depend strongly on some of the answers here.

Questions are as follows:

  1. I noticed Gunconf has only been tested with something called "AdvanceMAME" but is there any reason to believe it wouldn't work with stock MAME? That would be far more useful and have broader reach (including to me).

  2. Are there plans for Gunconf to support firmware updates at some point in the future?

  3. Does Gunconf support multiple guns/players?

  4. Could I still use the guns at some basic level even if I don't install Gunconf? If so, what would I miss?

  5. Are there plans to collaborate with Ultimarc on future updates (assuming any are in the works)? I know they can supply any low-level communication/code if needed.

As far as number four goes - I cant get my controller to be detected in gunconf. It doesnt work at all outside of the program even though it is detected by linux and retropie. I would hold off on it unless you want to use it on a windows rig. It works amazing under windows.

Hopefully one day I will find the solution. Every video that I watch on youtube shows people just hooking their guns up and playing. Literally no one has the same issue as me and afaik the author has no idea how to fix it either.

Gunconf is an util tool. It is just to configure the gun. It is not a driver. the gun is recognized as a mouse with absolute coordinates. The gun would then work If the emulator handles mouse with absolute coordinates. As far as I remember very few emulators do so...

Are there plans for Gunconf to support firmware updates at some point in the future?

Given my current involvement, you probably figure out the answer :-) Honestly, considering that:

  • You update the gun only once in a while: it's not too much of a burden to connect it to a win host
  • my primary use case was to reconfigure the gun between games using a raspberry pi: I couldn't find any user friendly simple way to upload the new firmware on the pi.

Does Gunconf support multiple guns/players?

it does support configuration of multiple guns

Could I still use the guns at some basic level even if I don't install Gunconf? If so, what would I miss?

you can, you don't even need gunconf at all
