I've already started perusing the source code, so this won't be as effective as it would've been.

Some examples using the api would be nice.

Yes please! It's very tedious having to go through the source code just to figure out how this works.

This extension seems to be unmaintained. You might want to look at Gedmo\Tree (see doc/tree.md for more info) which is nice and more complex aproach.
