I would like this as well. Ideally, I'd like to have three kinds of columns: fixed-width columns, columns that grow to fit their contents (with possible constraints), and columns that grow to fit available space (with the available space balanced between them via factors). So, (ignoring borders for a moment) if you have 80 characters to work with, a 20-character fixed column, a column whose contents make it 10 characters wide, and growable columns with factors 4 and 1, the latter two columns will take up 40 and 10 columns respectively.
