MODE setting not honored

When setting the MODE to 1 on my brand new M5stickC ths display only displays the tally number. Changing the MODE setting to 0 from either the web interface or the IDE makes no difference. Any ideas? I am using TallyArbiter als tally source which otherwise works perfect also with the M3 Tally software.
