⚠️ This issue respects the following points: ⚠️

  • [x] This is a enhancement/feature request. Not a bug or question.
  • [x] The topic is not already reported at Issues. (I've searched it).
  • [x] Markor is up to date. See Releases for the latest version. Updates are available from F-Droid and GitHub.
  • [x] The wanted feature/enhancement is not present in the latest development version (git master). (Please download and try the test version of Markor, named Marder. Don't worry; Markor and Marder appear as completely separate applications. You can install both side-by-side, and Markor's settings are not touched. If your desired feature is present, you don't need to open this issue. The change will be part of the next Markor update.)

Description

Greetings! Recently, while searching for a simple text editor that supports accessing links in plain text files, I found this wonderful text editor called Markor, which has become my favorite.

If you would be so kind, please make it more customizable by offering the possibility to hide certain elements from the graphical interface. For example, I would like to be able to check boxes to hide elements of my choice that I don't use, such as "To-Do" and "QuickNote," or for those who wish, the "Notebook" option as well.

Could you please modernize the Markor application icon to give it a more professional and modern look, while keeping it simple at the same time?

I have contributed to the translation of the Markor application, and I used Gemini AI to make the translation as accurate as possible. Please approve all my requests (in full), even if I have repeated some by updating previously translated elements myself. I have corrected as many translation or spelling errors and mistakes as possible that were made by those who translated the application before me. You can confidently approve 100% of the translated elements. I have done a good job, I assure you.

Please continue the development of this application and provide updates at least once every 6 months to keep this project active and alive. Thank you for your contribution by creating this WONDERFUL open-source TEXT EDITOR.

IMO quicknote and todo are fundamental parts of markor. Hiding them is not ideal, but ways to make the tabs take up less space would be good. I can implement things but I want someone else to come up with a good design.

Same goes for the icon. If you have suggestions, even a sketch for an icon that would be a good thing to start with - then @gsantner and others could provide some input etc

Welcome!

Markor is not that much big of an application. I don't plan to make everything customizable/hideable, too much options are a burden too, for both users and developers.

Could you please modernize the Markor application icon to give it a more professional and modern look, while keeping it simple at the same time?

Depends on what you exactly you are after? Markor has a traditional Android UI which works well for it's functionalities. It has to be practical and have lots of options at reach, not fluffy, over-colored or over-whitespaced.

I have contributed to the translation of the Markor application, and I used Gemini AI to make the translation as accurate as possible. Thanks for your contribution, but AI often comes with questionable origin (where does it get the text from? maybe big parts from somewhere that not allows using that text with the license?). It for sure is helpful for a lot of things, but we have to play fair with others.

Please continue the development of this application and provide updates at least once every 6 months to keep this project active and alive. Thank you for your contribution by creating this WONDERFUL open-source TEXT EDITOR.

There are no promises or ETAs. Like most open source projects it's mainly volunteer driven, which may or may not want to take their time. But Markor has been going on for many years with usually a few releases per year. Thanks, and contributions are welcome!

I have been thinking about this some more. I use quicknote and todo extensively but find that using them from MainActivity is not great because there is too little vertical space.

One option is to add quick note and todo as virtual files in the root folder, and get rid of the tabs in the main view entirely. This way they are still quite accessible (2 taps) but the tabs will no longer be there adding visual clutter.

Another benefit would be that app startup would get a lot faster (inflating 2 document edit fragments is not fast).

This is a huge change to the basic structure of Markor. Some users may not like it very much. What do you think @gsantner
