This is the end? Chanu Vs. Android 14
First, I'd like to thank the developer of this app, I have used it since its inception, and everyone else that stepped in when Google would change its operating system or push updates that would break Chanu. Like all good things, this sadly app has sadly came to an end (to me at the moment) I spent a solid few hours to get it semi functional and I'm honestly surprised that I was able to use and enjoy Chanu for this long, it has been by far the best chan app on android (I tried many different clients to see if I can get used to them, because I knew eventually Chanu - much like other great old apps would stop work) Well today was the day.
I am currently on a Pixel 8 Pro - Android 14 - March 5th 2024 Security Update - AP1A.240305.019.A1
I had been using chanu perfectly up until today - sure it wasn't the latest and greatest, the captcha didn't work and would occasionally crash, but I don't post, i just used it as a newsfeed to read, and to occasionally save a funny image or two.
This morning, I noticed it wouldn't load any of the threads on any board, i would just attempt to load
My first troubleshooting attempt: Clear Cache - No resolution Second Attempt - Clear User Data - No Resolution Third attempt - Uninstall Chanu (which was a huge risk but i took it)
I went and downloaded chanu_v2.0.32a_modlite.apk.zip thanks to Elad Karako - who mentioned this to me / shout out to https://github.com/alsd4git/chanu/releases/tag/v2.0.30 as well. as they have kept me going on this app.
and installed it - Mr. Google Play Protect, stepped in and said NOPE - so i turned off play protect, and it let install the apk.
After installing the update I got the dreaded prompt I knew I would receive:
- I gave up but tapped an area around this prompt - and got the app to semi work again - with all these design trends and the tik-tok-ification of the internet (youtube - shorts) (instagram - reels) (twitter - whatever the hell its trying to be) the internet being consolidated by Giant Tech Companies -- Chanu was by far my favorite app when I had downtime, navigation was simple, saving media was easy, sharing was easy. it was just not bloated.
So I'll finish off my "cool story bro" with a few things.
First, Thank you so much again for everyone from the developer, to all the people that stepped in to maintain the app for all these years. Second - are there any clients as simple as chanu that are even worth bothering I've tried so many and they all just have strange mechanics or want to make different directories for saved images, or watching threads wont work. if only I wasn't so smooth brained and was an actual developer I would try to fork and maintain this app, my skills are limited and laughable at best. (I don't even think I could Kode with Klossy)
Lastly, would anyone be interested in bringing this app up to whatever "modern android standards" are the baseline now (I have no clue what that involves or the time it takes, and I know the state of the world and how everyone is working more than before and the cost of everything has exponentially risen)
Thanks again to everyone.
Don't wanna Jinx Myself. But I TOO love Chanu. Especially for the widgets, so thanks to grzegorznitter! But I just wiped my phone by accident doing a sim swap(don't ask me how, still annoyed about it) and I just got the latest version from a fork, and I have a Fold 4 with all the updates and whatever, haven't had an issue. I did a fresh install a few days ago, and my widgets are back, app opens fine. Try using a different build. I believe the one I used was last updated in 2020, not the 2016 version. 👌👍😅🤞

you're extremely lucky that you got it up and running.
I am using the following build Version 2.0.32.a Released May 1 2020.
just not having luck, it'll function at times, or not function at all..as much as I love chanu, I don't think I would try the nuclear option of wiping my phone (I know you did your wipe accidently) but I not wanting to reconfigure everything.
Ah interesting. I'm not running that version exactly. 2.0.30 May 2nd 2020
Interesting I'll have to try that version out. I just simply can't browse the chans enjoyably without chanu. I sound so whiny.

Would you happen to have the link to your APK? For some reason I can't find it.

This fork, please report back. I'd like to know if you get it working again. Because like I said, I'm on the Fold 4, One UI 6, Android 14.
Found it: funny it was from a thread I made in 2019

Going to give this a try
