Opening Movies.
OK
If I open MetaZ and drag a movie into it, it looks things up.
If, however, I use a context menu, and use Open With … MetaZ won't look the film up.
What’s happening, there?
I am guessing you are using Catalina? I’ve had similar issues across several machines using Catalina. Rolled back to High Sierra. Problems gone.

Yep: I’m on Catalina.
Yea, I figured as much. The issues I had took a slightly different form but I think they are related to what you are seeing. I can definitely say everything was working fine until I upgraded to Catalina, then I had continual problems. After I downgraded the OS, the problems went away; same computers, same version of MetaZ, different OS, different result. Not saying MetaZ is at fault, just that there is some unresolved issues between it and Catalina.
