Render amenity=conference_centre

Expected behavior

https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:amenity=conference_centre should perhaps be rendered but has about 3000 objects.

Actual behavior

Only rendered when combined with landuse=commercial. Which is probably on purpose, but I wanted have an issue for that.

Are you proposing rendering it as a fill, or as a POI with an icon?

Not sure. An icon is probably not easy to find/create and most / all have a proper name. So a fill with its name is probably fine.

There are a couple other similar features which are documented:

• amenity=events_venue - used 8000 times - https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:amenity%3Devents_venue
• amenity=exhibition_centre - used 450 times - https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:amenity%3Dexhibition_centre
• amenity=events_centre - used 100 times only - https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:amenity%3Devents_centre

In particular, amenity=events_venue is more common and should probably be about as significant for rendering.

I downloaded all the ways and relations with events_venue or conference_centre in JOSM. The area of a median-sized events_centre is about 770 (Mercator square meters?), while a median-sized conference_center is 1200 square meters.

But since there are more events_venue features overall, there are also more of these which are over 2000 square meters, and about equal numbers at 10,000 square meters. Once you are 100,000 square meters there are more conference_centre features, but that’s only 50 total, vs 33 events_venue of that size. But for those very large features we also have amenity=exhibition_centre and there are 70 of these larger than 100,000 square meters.

amenity=conference_centre is predominantly used on buildings (which matches the wiki which defines those as buildings) or on nodes within buildings. Hence the idea of rendering them with a color fill is kind of pointless.

It also seems nearly half of the features with this tag are in Kerala, India where the tag seems to be used widely for features elsewhere tagged as amenity=community_centre or amenity=social_facility. amenity=conference_centre overall seems to be fairly poorly defined in its delineation towards those as well as the tags @jeisenbe mentioned.

So overall it does not seem we have a well defined and consistent use of tagging in this field at the moment so we should not promote specific tags by rendering them.
