I've been making a character-for-character trace of MS Sans Serif in FontForge, including Bold version of it. I called it "MS Sans Serif Raster". Here's how it looks: screenshot Try it out! https://github.com/1chan-level-journalist/MS-Sans-Serif-Raster

after step-by-step installation, I faced the same problem like @chloe-burbank does. The installation steps for the fonts https://github.com/grassmunk/Chicago95/blob/master/INSTALL.md#ms_sans_serif are very precise and helpful, but eventually MS Sans Serif BOLD looks strangely pixelated. So something's not quite right regarding the FontForge conversion, perhaps. (Manjaro Linux)

I've used/installed/selected the cronyx/Helvetica font instead (via Appearance and Window manager) and it looks great.

Yeah, the synthetic emboldening didn't work right for me either - it didn't look strangely pixelated, but font kerning didn't work, resulting in letters being squished together too close. That's why I ended up making a bold version of the font completely from scratch (just like the cronyx/Helvetica font).
