Canon EOS shuttercounter is not updated after captures

I can read the shutter count by gphoto2 --get-config /main/status/shuttercounter. After a number of captures I expect the shutter count should be increased. But a subsequent read returns the same count.

Only after a camera power cycle I can see the updated shutter count. Is this expected behaviour? Is there a way to read the updated shutter count without power cycling the camera?
