gphoto2 2.5.17 - Canon EOS M100

Open gabrielstuff opened this issue 6 years ago • 14 comments

Hi ! Thanks for the great work on this project. I'm trying to test the M100 with a simple:

--capture-image-and-download

but I got an error: Could not capture image.

the device display the following message:

Use target device

which does not ring a bell. I've tried the classical: sudo killall PTPCamera without success.

gphoto2 --capture-image-and-download
ERROR: Could not capture image.
ERROR: Could not capture.

The auto-detect feature works

gphoto2 --auto-detect
Model Port
----------------------------------------------------------
Canon EOS M100 usb:020,010

I'm on macOS High Sierra

thanks,

G

i did test Linux, it worked well there ...

is gphoto2 --list-all-config

working? which libgpoto2 version is in use?

msmeissn avatar Jun 14 '18 14:06 msmeissn

2.5.17 should work already nicely though... hmm. can you capture debug output?

gphoto2 --debug --debug-logfile=capture.log --capture-image-and-download

This version of gphoto2 is using the following software versions and options:
gphoto2 2.5.17 clang, popt(m), no exif, no cdk, no aa, jpeg, readline
libgphoto2 2.5.18 all camlibs, clang, ltdl, no EXIF
libgphoto2_port 0.12.0 iolibs: disk ptpip serial usb1 usbdiskdirect usbscsi, clang, ltdl, USB, serial without locking

But the good news is that it works now. Why now? and not before, simply because I forgot to put an SD Card in it.

Nonetheless, I was pretty sure, I was not forced to use an SDCard for the EOS1XXX series (1100, 1200, 1300).

gabrielstuff avatar Jul 06 '18 11:07 gabrielstuff

The M series is different a bit. I need to check on my M10 without SD Card... :)

msmeissn avatar Jul 07 '18 07:07 msmeissn

Yes, it is kind of weird. With a EOS serie, there are no issue with an existing or not SD Card.

gabrielstuff avatar Jul 09 '18 10:07 gabrielstuff

Can anyone tell me whether Live View is working with the M100? And if so, which resolution it is?

notnot avatar Oct 03 '18 20:10 notnot

it works on the M10, so I assume it also works on the M100

msmeissn avatar Oct 04 '18 05:10 msmeissn

I just got the newest version of gphoto2 and still have the same problem.

Before removing the SD-card from the camera gphoto 'Could not claim the USB device'. After removing the SD-card it could connect but i got the error that's mentioned in this thread

ERROR: Could not capture image. ERROR: Could not capture.

I created a logfile:

logfile.txt

I'm pretty new to Linux. Maybe i'm doing something wrong ?

Best regards

EDIT: I forgot to mention, i'm also trying to use a Canon EOS M100, which is listed as compatible. My OS is Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS.

El-Duderino-gh avatar May 15 '21 00:05 El-Duderino-gh

libgphoto2 2.5.25 is not the current one, 2.5.27 is ... hard to say if this will solve the problem though :/

msmeissn avatar May 15 '21 12:05 msmeissn

I tried it gain. This time with the most recent version (2.5.27) and on Manjaro. This the same Error as before:

ERROR: Could not capture image. ERROR: Could not capture.

Either i'm doing something wrong or i'm not sure the Canon EOS M100 should be on the compatible-list.

Still hoping it will work at some point.

EDIT: i also checked the Firmware on my EOS M100 and it's the most recent version available.

El-Duderino-gh avatar May 18 '21 02:05 El-Duderino-gh

I recently got a M100 for the purposes of timelapse. I use tons of T2i's with mo real issue. I am getting the same issues as detailes about with the M100. On the T2i's I can't have am SD card in the camera. Seems to be the same with the M100. Then without the card I ge the other error. "Could not capture image." Actually the first time I attempted with an SD card installed it did work "Once" and not again.

Edit: Summary reports - gphoto2 --summary Camera summary:
Manufacturer: Canon Inc. Model: Canon EOS M100 Version: 3-15.0.1.0 Serial Number: F3BBED19F5D64EED9D96DF8A8388D38C Vendor Extension ID: 0xb (1.0) Vendor Extension Description:

Note under device capabilities - No Image Capture, No Open Capture, Canon EOS Capture 2, does that mean gPhoto2 doesn't support it?

I've now discovered that if I leave an SD card in the camera but eject one of the SD cards mount to the RaspberryPi (2 cards always mount in File Manager when connecting a camera in my experience) then GPhoto2 will behave as expected and taking photos is possible

Tundrawalker avatar Aug 14 '22 21:08 Tundrawalker

I've now discovered that if I leave an SD card in the camera but eject one of the SD cards mount to the RaspberryPi (2 cards always mount in File Manager when connecting a camera in my experience) then GPhoto2 will behave as expected and taking photos is possible

Can you explain this to me? I only have one thing plugged into my pi 3b plus and I get some error message about "ERROR: Could not capture image." then it says something about "maybe can't focus" or something, I'll get screenshots tomorrow

TerrorInc avatar Oct 15 '22 12:10 TerrorInc

I had the same problem on my EOS M100 and I managed to take pictures by ensuring that:

  • The camera has enough space in front of it in order to autofocus (if not Canon EOS M Capture failed: Perhaps no focus?)
  • The camera folder in Gnome Files is umounted (gphoto cannot take control if the camera files are mounted)
  • The camera is correctly configured with the settings I want (RAW images, Flash Auto, etc.) before plug in the USB.

I have an SD card in the camera. Here is the command line:

gphoto2 --capture-image-and-download

Hope this help.
