Map for federal subjects
The feature
In the federal subjects foldout, we could have a map so that user easily can click through to an area they recognize.
If possible, it should zoom in to fit all federal subjects (and not always show the whole world).
Why?
For some people, it might be easier to find what they are looking for in a map than in an alphabetical list.
It may also more clearly show the coverage if we don't have all of them. (So perhaps the country should be outlined too.)
Examples and inspiration
It could be very similar to the map we have for countries (code in countries-map.html).
Zoombased or (or both) something with leaflets Layer Groups and Layer Control
Here is a mockup of how I imagine it could look like (but possibly with better coloring).
At some point we discussed the idea of rendering all federal subjects even if they have no content and give their page a call to action. If we did this we could render just the outlines of the subjects rather than layer on top of each other. We could still color non-content ones and content ones differently.
I like that idea! So perhaps something like this:
Would this feature only be used on a country with federal subjects? Or is this something for the main map? Because if we add support for international organizations, then at that point there may be countries with multiple layers.
We are discussing this right now as we are thinking about including EU. I personally don't think we should render a shape for EU(also we don't have a shape for it on Commons).
Would this feature only be used on a country with federal subjects?
My intention, reflected in the title of this issue (and hopefully the mockups), was to only have it on a country with federal subjects.
I was wondering if this feature wouldn't be better implemented for all country and organization pages. Subsequently, is it possible to provide a fallback in leaflet?
Something like:
- geoshape (P3896)
- OpenStreetMap relation ID (P402)
- coordinate location (P625)
Just an idea for #510 (and for the website to be more than contact points 😉)
organization pages
Most organizations don't have a geoshape at all, and probably should not have any coordinates on Wikidata either (orgs don't have coordinates, buildings have).
Countries obviously have them, but if you already clicked down to the country, I am not sure just showing an interactive map adds value. Instead, it might be more interesting to show the locator map image (P242), like this somewhere.
