This is wrong. A positive operator makes sure that it has non-negative eigenvalues.

When performing $\sqrt A$, you need to sqrt the eigenvalues under the expression of spectral decomposition:

$$ \sqrt A = \sum_i \sqrt \lambda_i | i \rangle \langle i | $$
