Commits on branch release-1.5 are not useful

Current Behavior

Branch release-1.5 has huge commits with no useful commit message. This makes it difficult to review the chanes when upgrading.

Expected Behavior

Small, self-contained commits with well-written commit messages.

Steps To Reproduce

Type git log release-1.5.

Anything else?
