Website: Unable to set defaults using jekyll

Unable to set a defaults to _contribute folder in the _config.yml; had to individually add the values to each file. defaults work for all additional folders like _docs and _pages

Forked and edited the code from mmistakes jekyll-theme

Can anyone who has previously used jekyll, mmistakes theme please help fix this issue.
