Recaptcha fading images in and out extremely slowly

Recently every time I get a Recaptcha prompt (which seems to happen way too often), it very slowly fades out clicked images (takes about 5 seconds per image), then slowly fades a new image in. These artificial delays are extremely annoying - why are they there?
