Blank spaces just not possible?

If you refer to blank spaces in crafting recipes, they can be achieved. First, in place of blank spaces, put an item that is not a part of the recipe. Second, filter that item out with a hopper (or a hopper minecart). And last, there should now be blank spaces where they're needed.
