Builds, installs fine x64 and ARMV6. But iw list is empty. Driver issue?

Hi: I have compiled and insmod'd this code for Ubuntu 16.04 (kernel 4.4) for x64 as well as the current release of Raspbian on a Raspberry Pi (kernel 4.9). The builds are successful, and after insmodding and rebooting the USB wifi device I am using (Realtek RTL8812AU chipset, Embedded Works EW5270UM)

My USB device seems to work ok, but I can't access some commands via the 'iw' utility. I am not sure if exactly how to troubleshoot and if there are missing features in the driver that prevent iw from working with the device or if I am missing some other part of the installation process.
