Ah, that explanation makes the error message make way more sense. The only way I could rationalise it was that something inconsistent made a lot of confusion down the line....

I think this might need support in llvmlite - see numba/llvmlite#862.

Many thanks for the PR! Could you please provide some details about the environment / setup in which this patch is useful? E.g. how is MinGW installed, how was LLVM...
