Not activating when multiple words highlighted
Prerequisite checklist
- [X] In case of a bug: Have you tried restarting Anki?
- [X] Are you running the latest version of the add-on. Have you redownloaded the add-on from AnkiWeb to make sure?
- [X] Did you check the add-on documentation (e.g. AnkiWeb description, Wiki if it exists) for known issues?
- [X] Did you perform a cursory search through the existing issue reports?
What is the problem/feature you would like to see fixed/implemented?
Problem Add on does not activate with multiple words (unlike the screencast example on the home page for the add on).
Currently using a Macbook with Anki 2.1 and the latest version of the popup dictionary add on. The add on functions well when a single word is highlighted, but does not activate when multiple words are highlighted. The problem persists when using the keyboard shortcut CMD+SHIFT+D
Known issue? Does this occur on windows OS?

Hey ZJ,
Thanks for the detailed report!
I wasn't able to reproduce the issue on my macOS test machine, but with issues like this it's oftentimes a particularity in a card rather than the platform that's preventing the add-on from working properly.
Would it be possible for you to attach a sample deck here with some of the affected cards? In order not to have to export an entire deck, you could create a filtered deck with a small sample of the cards, and then export that as an Anki file.
When you do attach the deck, it would also be helpful if you could let me know which particular words/phrases aren't working on your end (one possible cause might be hidden HTML characters between them).
P.S.: Thanks again for the coffee :) !
Thanks for the reply glutanimate.
The issue is present on all of my decks, but is most problematic with my anatomy one. Often I'll be trying to tie together all the cards that mention a certain muscle (i.e. fibularis longus), but I can only select 'fibularis' or 'longus' and then the results are somewhat useless because many cards contain those individual words.
The add-on has never worked for me with more than one word (on version 2.0 or 2.1)
A random selection of 50 cards is attached.
Thanks again
Hi again,
Sorry for not getting back to you earlier. I didn't have time to look into this until now.
So the good news / bad news is that I still can't reproduce the issue on macOS High Sierra. I recorded a quick screencast to showcase how the add-on behaves for me on Anki 2.1/2.0 (please ignore the Shift key indicator at the bottom. That's a bug in the recording software): https://streamable.com/aw15d
This leaves us with two potential causes:
- An interaction with another add-on
- Something specific to your system setup
Concerning 1: Would you be so kind and post a screenshot of your add-on list here? That would be the quickest way for me to get an overview of the add-ons you have installed
Concerning 2: Are you primarily using a mouse or touchpad on your Mac? Do you any apps installed that might interfere with keyboard/mouse input? (e.g. Karabiner, BetterTouchTool, etc.)
noob here, so how do you actually add this to Anki. I downloaded the zip file but kinda stuck from here. I also have lots of other questions about Anki features that I would like to have...any help
@snowKNOWZ Have you tried following the installation instructions here? If you need help with a particular step just let me know.
However, this is not the right place to discuss this as this is a bug report about something different.
I had the issue of it not working when selecting multiple words when I tried high lighting but you have to highlight in a specific way to avoid it. If i just highlighted both words normally it wouldn't work. If i double clicked the first word then on the second click held down the left mouse button and highlighted the rest of the words it fixed the issue and would work.
