Lagging UI on MacOs & Image Occlusion
Problem description
UTD Anki for MacOS. Image Occlusion suddenly became slow/glitchy in addition to the main page UI where it's beginning to take up large chunks of CPU on my MacPro M1. I have tried a few troubleshooting issues of restarting Anki, updating MacOS to the latest version, download and re-install Anki. This is the first time it has happened; I primarily use Anki for my medical notes with decks containing roughly 300 cards on average.
Please describe the issue concisely in here. In case of an error: Walk us through the steps you took to get there. What happened? What did you expect to happen?
Checklist
Please replace the space inside the brackets with an x if the following items apply:
- [x] I've restarted Anki to see if it helps
- [x] I've verified that I use the latest version of the add-on by redownloading it from AnkiWeb
- [x] I've verified that I use the latest version of Anki by checking at https://apps.ankiweb.net#download
- [x] I've tried to disable other add-ons to see if there are any interactions present
- [ ] My issue disappears when I hold shift while starting Anki.
- [x] I've checked if anyone else reported this problem before by looking through the issue reports. I also checked to see if there is a section about known issues in the add-on description, documentation, or README.

Error message (if any)
If you've received an error message, please copy and paste it between the backticks below:
Hi there, thanks for the report. If Anki's deck list is affected, there's a good chance that you've run into an Anki bug that's unrelated to the add-on. My recommendation would be to disable all add-ons, use Anki for a bit and then see if the problem reoccurs. If it doesn't, I would try enabling all add-ons other than IOE and checking again. Finally, if the issue only occurs with IOE active, I would try to observe if there are any particular steps that trigger the performance issues. I.e.:
- Do they happen even if you haven't used IOE in a session, yet?
- Do they appear after using IOE to create new notes?
- etc.
Disable All Add-Ons
- Performance did not change, still experiencing lag with on UI menu and studying.
Enable All Add-Ons (3), IOE Disabled
- Performance did not change, still experiencing lag with on UI menu and studying.
- 3 Add-Ons: Review Heatmap, Ankimote, Extended Card Stats for Review
Triggers to Performance Issues
- I was adding cards to a deck of mine and suddenly the program became very sluggish and laggy. I saved my work and closed out of the program. Once re-opened, the issues remained the same.
- Clicking on decks & subdecks still cause roughly a :01sec delay in section highlight vs cursor location
Do they happen even if you haven't used IOE in a session yet?
- Yes it does unfortunately
Do they appear after using IOE to create new notes?
- Yes, IOE is significantly less "snappy" with use
Other
- I do not experience any issues outside of Anki in terms of performance, everything runs smoothly besides Anki after this issue has occurred
- I tried downgrading & quit to change Anki to 2.1.54
My Specs:
- M1 MacBook Pro 2021 // Ventura 13.2.1 // 16GB
- See URL below for a video clip as to what I am experiencing: https://www.reddit.com/r/Anki/comments/111o71q/anki_lagging_image_occlusion_and_general_ui/

Update: I did an entire uninstall of Anki. Went back and did the Gt5 version (despite it being Intel for my MBP-M1). So far, there are no performance issues. It is apparent that this is a Gt6 issue from my understanding. I have attached an image regarding which Anki version I have installed in replacement of Gt6. I will leave this open for now if @glutanimate happens to notice anything or wants to refer to this later.
Best, SJ-DPT
Just experienced the same issue this evening on my M1. Followed your advice and my problem. I appreciate all your clean instructions. Cheers.
