Alternatives for quotas in RHGS3.5.3

As Redhat has marked quotas deprecated in RHGS 3.5.3, what are the recommended alternatives for customers requiring quotas on volumes or directories?

https://github.com/gluster/glusterfs/pull/1750 is in development which over time will be a replacement. https://github.com/gluster/glusterfs/pull/1763 was merged last week.
