Make relevant functions static
This is a meta issue to improve across the codebase - make functions that can and should be, static. It helps performance and it improves readability. Along the way, it'll also allow remove redundant variable sanity checks (for example, null checks).
Also need to update developer doc to add this as standard coding practice in Gluster.
