baca1245 fix coordinates

Open joeylovestrand opened this issue 1 year ago • 3 comments

The coordinates for Bacama-Yimburu (baca1245) appear to be incorrect.

The current coordinates put this Central (Biu-Mandara) Chadic language as a geographic outlier west of the West Chadic languages.

The only reference to this language is a word list which notes that the speaker is from "Yimburu (across river from Human)".

This appears to be a reference to Imburu which is across the river from Numan in the area where Bacama (baca1246) is spoken.

Thanks I'll indeed fix that coordinate accordingly.

The whole idea of a separate language for Bacama Yimburu is that the wordlist in Kraft 1981 is said to be very divergent. But if so it might also just be a bad elicitation session, because all other sources say Bachama dialect diversity is not rampant and are intelligible etc (and even to Bata). Have you looked at this more closely? Or at the Bata group more generally. I would be interested in any insight you might have.

all the best. H

Hm, does seem like it would have come up again if it was a legitimate distinction, but I don't have any evidence to rule it out, and not sure who would be able to go investigate.

I think maybe just a more careful lexical investigation of the existing materials might be useful (btw do you have access to any SIL data on Ngwaba [ngw]?). Something for a Chadicist like you (or something to suggest for a student, I'll keep it in mind). all the best, H
