Social guidelines
Moving here from a discussion on Discord: would it be an idea to have a set of guidelines akin to the Recurse Center's social rules, to complement the code of conduct? RC has these four rules (with further details and examples on the linked page):
- No well-actually’s
- No feigned surprise
- No backseat driving
- No subtle -isms
In contrast to the code of conduct, these rules aren't meant to be unbreakable; in fact breaking them is expected. They only exist to create a friendly environment, and breaking a rule doesn't need any more of a response than "hey, that's backseat driving" before everyone moves on. I've found these rules are very effective in the Recurse Center's online spaces, which are very pleasant and inclusive as a result.
I think there's a lot to gain here! Let's work something out.
One this I would like to tailor our version for is that people have much less investment in an online programming forum they may have only just joined for the first time. I think the "-ism" language could be a bit scary and put some folks on the defensive or make them act aggressive. Some softer wording could help them in that case.
This one was just shared with me, could be another useful reference: https://www.ponylang.io/community/norms/
is there any working doc on that?
Not done anything here since, no.
