Basic Usage - Seeking Recommended
OBJECTIVE: It occurs to me that I'd like to use CherryTree to manage 2FA , and the like. API Secret keys and such because I'm reminded that CherryTree can save the database encrypted.
I dont necessarily want to have my regular CherryTree with the encrypted file however, as I share it now via MEGA between a few diff systems, and it works nicely!
But, for "secret" or private, sensitive information, perhaps I'd like to save and load an encrypted setup, separately.
Has anyone a recommended best practice for that type of use? E.g. Step one, with CherryTree open and your regular database loaded, then do step two. Step two is...
I ask because in my experience, it seems that CherryTree can sometimes prefer a certain order of operations maybe to ensure the resulting configuration is exactly as desired.
Thank you!
In my opinion do not treat CherryTree as a beast of burden loaded with more “features”.
Make it work with other prime apps to achieve your aims in a toolchain.
For the scenario posted my suggestion is open a free account with Proton Mail.
Explore how to use 2FA and Proton Pass.
Explore how to use Proton Vault.
Share CherryTree files securely through Proton Vault.

Perhaps what you are looking for here is the possibility to encrypt / password protect only a node, not the whole tree. This has been requested before, it is something I will try to address in 2025
im quite certain there is no need to have any second (or third) look at this considering this for me. it is appropriate it is closed.
I seriously don't think i'd ever use that, @giuspen (encrypt per node).
having first seen this, @gitvectors - thanks for the advisory. does Proton VPN / Vault remain the recommended free secure service? I am stupid enough engage in auto-pay and such...
I need to encrypt more than I do. So. thinking of a single node in C/T is far beyond my current level of obsession with it.
:)
Edit: Good lookin' out @m1k3s0 - reading this (my ramblings, as O/P). What!?!? You maintain the Guyadeque repo? haha. that was my fave audio app on Linux back in the ancient times!
to this day, when I see "Gwenview", or what to launch it, i type and fumble guyad... instead. how about that?
Not sure what you mean by Proton ripping you off. You accidentally signed into auto pay? I face that problem with multiple subscriptions and you have to stay alert to closing them. For that you can contain all subscriptions in a Proton vault (like a subscrption wallet). And you need a dead man's handle to tidy up subscription if you fall under a bus. Or Tesla car.
I find it easier to distribute files securely using tresorit.com account in concert with Proton. I checked that I can distribute ctd files to short list of recipients. CherryTree has more uses than described here. I am using it as a "shuttle service" between desktop and AI Agents. A workflow I dreamed up. Works well.
@ajaxStardust Sorry to disappoint, but I do not maintain Guayadeque. It was forked by thothix (https://github.com/thothix/guayadeque) as the original author (anonbeat) is no longer maintaining it. Based on the README in thothix's repo, he is trying to keep it alive. I then forked thothix's repo to essentially have my own copy. I agree though, Guayadeque is a shining example of how small and efficient software can be while still packing a punch in terms of functionality. You can still use it if you don't mind compiling it.
