Can't generate latex

Version, Operative system Version 1.1.2 / Windows 10

Describe the bug When trying to input some latex text in the node, Cherrytree give me the information that it's not possible to access the executable 'dvipng'.

I tried the following procedures:

  • Deactivate antivirus (Kaspersky)
  • Exclude the Cherrytree and node folder from the antivirus
  • Install as administrator
  • Install previous versions
  • Install in other drive, not C:
  • Change the security properties of the cherrytree folder (give total permission to write, save etc.) Update
  • Add the bin folder to system path

What more i can do?

If you try with the portable https://www.giuspen.net/software/cherrytree_1.1.2.0_win64_portable.7z are you still having the issue? (look for mingw64/bin/cherrytree.exe after extraction)

Ok let's try this:

  1. if you look at windows defender settings, there is a way to exclude a folder from its checks. Try to exclude the folder that contains cherrytree.exe (and dvipng.exe)
  2. verify that dvipng.exe is still there and wasn't removed previously from the antivirus Kaspersky/ windows defender
  3. if it still fails, in cherrytree preferences dialog enable the debug log, then restart cherrytree, reproduce the problem and paste the debug log file content here

OK I will prepare a portable bundle for you to try and I will need the new log. You should format the log as code though in github or as you can see it is wrongly trying to apply markdown formatting and it is not easy to read. I will get back with the link to the portable version to try.

Can you paste here the Latex text that you are trying to render? Do you have just one Latex box or multiple?

@giuspen it's the example when we use latexbox in Cherrytree:

Can you copy and paste into a windows terminal: "C:\Users\Hildebrando Pereira\Desktop\cherrytree_1.1.2.0+30_win64_portable\mingw64\bin\latex.exe" --interaction=batchmode -output-directory=C:\Users\HILDEB~1\AppData\Local\Temp\.GQ76O2 C:\Users\HILDEB~1\AppData\Local\Temp\.GQ76O2\1-13120-1-__ct_special.tex And report what you got as output? Is a file 1-13120-1-__ct_special.dvi generated into C:\Users\HILDEB~1\AppData\Local\Temp\.GQ76O2 ? Does the file C:\Users\HILDEB~1\AppData\Local\Temp.LUO6O2\1-11824-1-__ct_special.tex exist? Can you check it's content? Can you copy it to another folder and try the same command changing to the folder where the Tex file now is?

I will try to guide you to a few commands to simplify the process and see if we can get latex.exe to work at all for you. I'm doing the same on my PC and will paste my output.

  1. I create E:\sandbox
  2. I place the file test.tex (attached here zipped, you will unzip there) test.zip
  3. I move cherrytree_1.1.2.0+36_win64_portable into E:\sandbox

Then I open a terminal and run the following commands:

cd E:\sandbox\cherrytree_1.1.2.0+36_win64_portable\mingw64\bin

.\latex.exe --interaction=batchmode -output-directory=E:\sandbox E:\sandbox\test.tex

This is pdfTeX, Version 3.141592653-2.6-1.40.25 (TeX Live 2023/Built by MSYS2 project) (preloaded format=latex)
 restricted \write18 enabled.

This is the output that I see, and the files E:\sandbox\test.aux E:\sandbox\test.dvi E:\sandbox\test.log are generated
