README.org footnote not properly supported

Unlike the exported markdown version (within Emacs), the org version is not rendered properly on github, where there are no links provided for footnote markers (e.g., "[fn:1]") in the main body.

I believe our upstream org-mode renderer has long-outstanding bugs preventing this: https://github.com/wallyqs/org-ruby/issues/32

We don't have the resources to fix the upstream, but if any fixes do land I'm happy to get them included here.

We're hitting this too. ~~I'm curious, why not use https://github.com/bdewey/org-ruby, which is many commits ahead of https://github.com/wallyqs/org-ruby, and claims to support footnotes?~~ Edit: I see I read the ahead/behind exactly the wrong direction. 🤦‍♂️
