Architecture Choices

This isn't an issue exactly but I'm having a hard time understanding architecture of this project. Namely, I want to know why Redis is used instead of just MySQL by itself. As far as I can understand, the websocket has to wait for the MySQL log to be published before it can push data. So if that's the case, then why use Redis at all? Wouldn't it make more sense to push the websocket data directly from the binlogstream?
