Trouble with parallel commits

I understand that I'm supposed to be creating a parallel universe via git, but have no idea how. I can move the head to before the child was eaten by a lion, but then I've got no clue. I've tried 'git add child', 'git add cage/child' to make both parties happy, but I'm on the wrong track, I think. Can you help me understand what I should be doing?

Try adding some meat to the cage ;)
