Extension cannot be started in Safari: "Safari detected an app or service that interfered with clicking"

Open mark-walle opened this issue 1 year ago • 0 comments

Describe the bug

The extension is prevented from turning on by Safari due to https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT211233?cid=mc-ols-safari-article_h211233-macos_ui-06162020.

Attempting to turn on the extension results in an error window stating: "Safari detected an app or service that interfered with clicking."

To Reproduce

  1. Download the extension from the App Store.
  2. In Safari go to the Safari menu and select Settings > Extensions.
  3. Select the checkbox beside the Magnet Links extension.

Restarting Safari does not work, uninstalling and then reinstalling the app also does not work.

Expected behavior The app should turn on without the warning being presented.

Desktop (please complete the following information):

  • OS: macOS Sonoma version 14.2 Beta (23C5030f)
  • Browser: Safari
  • Version 17.2 (19617.1.11.11.3)

Additional context Note that I'm on the macOS Sonoma Public Beta update stream and this is a Beta version of Sonoma. Nevertheless, this is clearly an Apple security policy intended to prevent extensions from hijacking clicks, and it may be present in earlier versions of the MacOS; or it at least will become commonplace in future versions of MacOS.

I will attempt a safe-mode activation of the extension later and report an update on this issue after doing so.
