❤️ A thank you note

I just wanted to say a huge thank you. I'm currently looking for a job, and needed a database app to manage my status on different offers, applications, my notes on them, etc. I first tried to do it in OpenOffice Base, but it was crashing constantly and losing my work. I then tried LibreOffice Base, but it wanted me to install JRE, which was "oh, no, please not :(" for me. I then tried searching on alternativeto.net, with Open-Source + Windows as filters, not really hoping for much. Suddenly it showed me Symphytum, and it looked like perfect fit. And after some initial use it seems to be really great. So, being an OSS dev (in hobby time) myself, I just wanted to say a huge thank you.

I especially love:

  • the ease of adding new fields
  • the ease of changing value labels in combo-box fields
  • that I can use unicode emoji in combo-box values
  • the ease of changing field names
  • the ease of laying out and re-arranging the fields in the form
  • that a text field can be made into a multi-line notes field with a quick resize
  • that the data can be easily browsed in the "spreadsheet" view
  • that I can easily sort the data in the "spreadsheet" view by clicking on the header
  • that the data is saved in SQLite format (IIUC), so I can feel safe about the format being open and not "locked-in" if I need to back it up / review in future
  • how snappy the app feels
  • that you have a "Portable App" version
  • that you are cross-platform, so I can try to use it on other platforms later if I need.

❤️❤️❤️

Thank you!

Also, did I say Thank you?

Also, I'm hoping to send a (rather small unfortunately, but still) donation at some later time once I get through initial testing period. As a totally optional idea, you might like to consider also adding a "donate" button in the GUI, Calibre-style (it totally worked for me in case of Calibre) — even better if it could be changed to some kind of a "this person donated" marker after I've donated, both for my donator's self-appreciation ;), and also so that other people might also see that I donated when they see me use it, and thus feel more encouraged to do so ;) I still profoundly remember seeing a "Registered to [a particular guy]" label on a Total Commander window on the screen of one of my university professor's.

Thanks for the feedback.

Regarding the donation feature, note that after 30 days of (active) usage the app will ask if you want to donate, so users cannot really miss that "feature".

Additionally there's a donate now action under the help menu, In my opinion a button inside the main window would be too intrusive and distracting.

I'll think about acknowledging donations, few users are donating via paypal and others via cryptocurrencies. On paypal I get the email and name of that person but on other methods like crypto it's not possible since they are anonymous, and even then I can't collect those data (EU, GDPR and other privacy issues). I could add a list of contributors (donators) but it would require actively each one to contact me to provide the info (name) to be listed inside the UI (about page) or here on GitHub inside the README.

Ah, didn't know about the asking for donation :)

As to acknowledging, I was thinking vaguely about showing it in-app by some basic priv+pub key scheme (a.k.a. signing), where you would hold a priv key, and the app would keep a public key. You could then send a short, signed, personalized message like "Donated by <person>" as a reply to payment, if user choses a custom name they want to set as "<person>". This could then be pasted as "license key"/whatever in the app, and if the public key would confirm signature, the app would show the message in title bar and/or toolbar and/or status bar / ...

Uh, did I say this software is amazing and I love it? I would kinda like to say Thank You again... it's helping me in yet another research for an important choice, and the drag & drop images are another feature that is just plain so awesome and fun they make me just feel this surge of joy and smile every freaking time I drag another image from a website... it gives me this tiny little bit of pleasure and instant gratification that is so valuable to me while doing the dumb and annoying research collection chore I hate so much, making it a little but infinitely important bit lighter to bear...
