Created file not opening with Chrome browser nor other chromium browsers

Open Rob-the-knob opened this issue 4 years ago • 9 comments

The Singlefilez file created in Opera with your extension opens flawlessly with Firefox but NOT with Chrome or with Opera itself.

The error message while trying to open the file in Opera or Chrome:

Error: Cannot open the page from the filesystem. Chrome: Install SingleFileZ and enable the option "Allow access to file URLs" in the details page of the extension (chrome://extensions/?id=offkdfbbigofcgdokjemgjpdockaafjg). Otherwise, start the browser with the switch "--allow-file-access-from-files". Safari: Select "Disable Local File Restrictions" in the "Develop" menu.

This error message is displayed due to a technical limitation in Chromium-based browsers, such as Chrome, Opera, Microsoft Edge etc. This limitation prevents SingleFileZ from working properly in these browsers. There is nothing I can do to fix or circumvent this issue.

The only way I can solve this problem is to remove SingleFileZ from the Chrome Store and say files are compatible only with Firefox.

Probably that would be the only solution to this problem. Like said before your other extension Singlefile is outstanding.

Does it really hurt that SingleFileZ is present on the store of Chrome? I force nobody to install it and I do not promote it.

No it probably doesn't hurt SingleFileZ is present on the store of Chrome but mentioning in the manual that created files are compatible only with Firefox would be appropriate if you ask me.

It's described in the "IMPORTANT" section here:

In the "Note" section here:

In the "Download" section of the homepage of the project here:

And in the error message you cited.

Isn't it enough?

Note also that even if in 50 years, no browsers support files produced by SingleFileZ, as long as you have a program to unzip files, you won't be screwed.

Okay..., I won't review the Singlefilez because it's useless to me and you probably have very good reasons to go on with this project (I'm not a computer wizard). In my 'layman' opinion (but that's entirely up to you) I would have described it more clearly instead of the small-print. But then again maybe I'm wrong about that too... In any case thank you kindly for your fast and extensive response and your patience with me. I apologize for the initially negative response due to my mistake to mix-up singlefilez and Singlefile).

From my point of view, SingleFileZ is a niche extension and will not satisfy most SingleFile users. I'm okay with that. I'll try to emphasize a bit more that the extension is necessary to read files in a Chromium-based browser.

Note that, in the past (~ 10 years ago), it was accepted that to read, for example a MAFF file, you had to install the extension required to decode it.

Don't worry about the negative answer, the situation wasn't very clear to me either.

Thank you for your explanation and understanding. I wish you all the best.....

You're welcome! I keep this issue open to remind myself that perhaps the warning should be made clearer and more visible.

Edit: By the way, thank you for your review of SingleFile!

The warning has been fixed for a long time actually.
