Can't troubleshoot boot problem after upgrade to UmbrelOS 1.2 because root user gets locked

Even after I unlock the root user while I still have version 1.1 running, the update to 1.2 locks the root user again, and blocks me from troubleshooting this boot error. Screenshot attached. When I restart again, the system rolls back to version 1.1 and I have root user back to unlocked. Is there any way to update without it locking root? IMG_20240621_132216
