Pages field: `sortBy` option

It would be great, if the user could sort pages in a pages field programmatically instead of manually.

Example why this might be useful: I have a pool of projects and I want to allow the user to pick projects for a calendar section. In the front end these pages would automatically appear sorted in a calendar list. That's why it would be great if they already sort themselves in the pages field in the panel according to a date field in the project page and also disallow manual sorting, so the user does not get the impression that they can sort the projects in the front end.
